Research Areas in Smart Materials and Structures

Smart materials and structures are adaptive elements utilizing multiphysics coupling with embedded control in order to reach wished behavior. Smart piezocomposites with classical or neurofuzzy control are studied as prototype smart systems by our group.

Metamaterials have strange properties and can be taylored or even controlled in order to achieve certain requirements. Microstructures leading to negative Poisson ratio in elasticity create auxetic metamaterials ( Greek word ‘αυξητικός’). They have enhanced mechanical properties, especially in dynamics and wave propagation. Our group works for the optimal design and investigates various applications of auxetics. Futuristic attempts to design adaptive metamaterials with included artificial intelligence are also being considered.
